Gulf Cup 27: Saudi Arabia Chases Fourth Title After 23-Year Absence from the Podium

The Saudi national football team, the “Green Falcons,” is preparing for an anticipated challenge as it seeks to end a title drought of more than two decades when it hosts the 27th Gulf Cup in the city of Jeddah from September 23 to October 6.

The “Green Falcons” are seeking their fourth Gulf title and an end to their 23-year absence from the Gulf championship podium, dating specifically to their last title in 2003.

The draw placed Saudi Arabia at the top of Group A, described as the group of death, alongside strong teams with long histories in the tournament: Iraq, four-time champions; Kuwait, the record holder with 10 titles; and Oman, two-time champions.

The Saudi squad hopes to capitalize on home advantage to top its group, advance to the knockout stages, and ultimately lift the trophy.

Saudi Arabia, coached by Yorgos Donis, will enter the Gulf tournament without two key players among the eight World Cup participants left out by the Greek coach: captain and Al Hilal star Salem Al-Dawsari, who is recovering from an injury, and Lens defender Saud Abdulhamid, who has been absent from his French club’s squad in recent weeks due to injury.

Former Saudi national team and Al-Ettifaq captain Saleh Khalifa said, “It is very wonderful to see our country preparing for an exceptional continental event such as the Asian Cup finals shortly afterward, but this anticipated hosting must be an incentive that doubles the responsibility placed on the players and coaching staff now, rather than an excuse to relax or approach Gulf Cup 27 with tactical indifference.”

He added, “The biggest mistake we could make is to postpone our goals and say that we are building for 2027. A great structure can only be built on solid foundations laid today rather than tomorrow, and great national teams do not grow in closed experimental rooms; they hone their strengths in official matches and under the pressure of the fans.”
